Question: How to fix my printer?

( Back )

Answer #1:

It's pretty hard to say without seeing it or a picture of what it's doing. Also, is the line going down the page or across the page?

I'm going to guess it's going down the page as that's the most common problem.

Laser printers use a laser to scan the photoreceptor to begin the image process, if anything (paper, dust, etc.) is blocking the laser, it can cause a white line. This can be at the laser exit window or possibly at the photoreceptor. You'd have to look around to see if you can see anything inside the printer that shouldn't be there.

Another possibility is the toner cartridge is defective or has something on, or in it, that is blocking the toner from being applied correctly. Again, look for anything wrong on it or try replacing it.

You could also have something wrong with the transfer roller that transfers the toner onto the paper, or possibly the fuser could be causing a problem as well.

Sorry to say, there are many possibilities. Do your best to look around inside, but it may need to be looked at by a tech to give a definitive answer. A good tech can quickly isolate and identify the problem, but if you don't know what to look for, or where to look, it can be pretty hard to tell. You could try replacing the components (drum, toner, transfer roller, fuser, etc.) one by one, but that would be rather expensive.

Best of luck.
